I read about Amelia today on MYModernMet. She is a very talented photographer who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28 and like me Amelia is uninsured, like most artists here in the US. If you would like to read more about Amelia and see how you can help follow this link to MyModernMet blog and see examples of her work. - [link]

I donated, and I have to be honest I typically wouldn't donate to this type of situation generally. That is because I tend to prefer to donate to people doing the donation drive in person, and to charities that I have a direct connection with. But today is my mother's birthday, and she beat breast cancer 17 years ago, and she is still around today, so this hit close to home :-)

This is so good to hear. I was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. I have been through chemo and radiation. I can't wait to say it's been 17 years for me!!!

Wow I am sorry you had to go through all of that, I know it's a difficult and tough process. How are you feeling these days? I hope you get to say it's 50 years for you some day. :D

Im feeling ok, I have some back problems from all the surgeries I had but I am getting on my feet trying to start a new life. It was a rough and difficult road especially cause I had complications but trying to move on. I am working with a cancer clinic to try and get the care I need....also complicated. But so far had my mammo and MRI with help from cancer charities and clinic who help cancer patients without insurance. I had health insurance most of the 25 years I was married and barely needed it. We paid over a $1200 a month and now when I need it...its not there. Thats life!:(

I am glad to hear your feeling okay, but I know the surgeries can be quite invasive, and getting back to a normal life after treatment can be a challenge. It sounds terrible to me that you have almost beg to get the care you need to be able to get healthy again. One thing about Canada, the care can take a bit of time coming, but it is aways provided for everyone universally. If you paid for health insurance for 25 years and barely every used it, what happened to it now? That's not life, that's just plain unfair and ridiculous to me.

Here in states you pay for health insurance month to month. If you paid this month then your covered. If you miss a payment then you don't get health care for that month. My x-husband and I had insurance for 25 years and paid each month. When we separated and then he lost his job. He couldn't pay monthly fee. I didn't realize until I was in chemo on day that my last chemo had not been paid by insurance. So I had to leave and couldn't get chemo for about two weeks until I found a way to get temporary government insurance for emergencies but in order for you to get that type of insurance you have to be completely without work and no money. So if you are completely impoverished you can get government healthcare and if your wealthy or have a good job that pays for your health insurance then your ok. People in between are the ones without healthcare. I make money but no where near enough to pay for health insurance which could be about $1000-2000 a month. I have met some friends of friends from Canada and talked to them about differences so I am aware how different it is. I have nothing good to say about the US and their healthcare system. They have made it such a lucrative business that having good health and getting care is only for those who are wealthy and healthy. It's a very sad and disgusting way of treating people. Many people die unnecessarily cause they are scared to go to the doctors and go in such deep debt so they wait to go when it's usually too late. My oncologist had two patients recently and both came too late cause they avoided health care and now they are terminal. One of them is a 32 year old woman. Be thankful for what you have, it's better to wait a few weeks for a test then to wait years or never get the healthcare you need.

Long day here, started work at 8 AM yesterday, and just finished at 12:45 AM today. I understand the system there now and it sucks. Worst is the timeline of the way things happened for you (which I know you are acutely aware of). If there were things such as bad timing awards, I suspect you would net top honours. I give you full credit for being such a positive and upbeat person after dealing with all the crap you have had to deal with. It seems typical that the system there looks after both ends (the have alls, and the have nones), and leaves the ones in the middle out in the cold.

I have to admit that I have always felt lucky to be a Canadian, our country is not perfect by any means but it has a lot of very good qualities about it, and our healthcare is one of them.

So if you don't mind me asking where are you at now with your treatments, and in general how are you doing? It seems to me that you've gone through an awful lot, and yet you are still so creative, and positive.

It was good for me to finish my long day and read what you wrote it, puts in perspective that being tired and sore is not the end of the world, and that I need to be thankful for what I have. I have always said to my daughters that my only two wishes for them are that they be healthy and happy, and I wish the same to you. :-)
